How to choose the right fabric for your sewing pattern | My top five tips…

This is something I’ve been asked about quite a lot recently on Instagram and over on YouTube so I thought I’d write a short blog and make a quick YouTube video explaining how I personally go about selecting my pattern and fabric matches. I hope you might find something helpful in it 🙂 Tip No. 1 – Use the Pattern Envelope… It might be an obvious one but those fabric suggestions are included on the back of your pattern envelope for a good reason and that is that the pattern designer or company think these will work best for the type of garment the pattern is designed to make. That’s…

An Indigo/Lyra pattern mash up – possibly my new favourite dress…

Ah the midi dress trend, are you a lover or a hater?? I have to say, for a long while I was unsure about this oh so difficult length to get right, particularly in ready to wear dresses where my little old petite self would simply end up drowning in what should have been midi length and invariably turned out to be maxi and possibly a little bit more in the shops.  Enter yet another reason why I love being able to make my own clothes… I have to say though, I really like the midi dress trend.  I think it’s that little bit more flattering than maxi if you…

Sewing my first Lyra Dress by Tilly and the Buttons – A Sewing Pattern Review…

The minute Tilly and the Buttons brought out the Lyra Shirt Dress pattern, I knew it was right up my street and I had to have a go at it. I bought the pattern immediately and then, despite my initial enthusiasm, it sat in my stash for a little while while I admired all of the other lovely versions I saw people making up online. The pattern is described as a ‘romantic shirt dress’ which I think is a great description for it since it has the more formal style ‘proper’ shirt bodice and then the floaty romantic style ‘buffet style’ tiered gathered skirt at the bottom. If you’re looking…

Three High Street inspired looks I want to sew this summer…

Hunting around on the high street and scouring Pinterest and Instagram for (yet more) sewing inspiration is one of my favourite things to do. I have a whole board saved on Pinterest for sewing inspiration (you can follow me here if you’d like to) and I tend to save looks and outfits that I’m inspired by on Instagram too. Today I thought I’d share with you three looks I’m loving at the moment and how I’d like to make my own garments this summer, using this inspiration. A blouse with a frilly collar…. Ah collars, they’re everywhere at the moment aren’t they and I’ll admit to having been pretty skeptical…
