Sewing Inspiration

Designing My dream Valentines Day outfit – with Makerist and MyFabrics…

So, during February, Makerist and My Fabrics are running a Valentines challenge over on Instagram and the idea is that you create a sketch or mood board of your dream Valentines Day outfit.

If you’ve not heard of Makerist before, they are an amazing craft website with loads of sewing, knitting and craft patterns and creative blogs, tutorials and inspiration. If you’d like to visit their website I’ve linked it here. My Fabrics are a fab online fabric seller with a really wide range of dressmaking and home wear fabrics, knitting supplies and haberdashery. If you’ve not heard of them before and want to pay them a visit, I’ve linked to their website here.

The inspiration…

Not being the best at drawing or sketching, I decided to create myself a mood board of inspiration for my dream outfit. Whenever I’m on the hunt for outfit or sewing ideas, I always head straight to Pinterest for inspiration; I’m not a fan of the traditional Valentines red so I mainly searched around the themes of romantic, floral, vintage and feminine. I have a Valentines board saved over on my account, if you’d like to follow me over there I’ve linked my account here.

Soon, as is the way with Pinterest, I was drawn down the rabbit hole of looking at pretty dress after pretty dress. There were loads of lovely outfits over there but my top three were definitely these. Wrap dresses appear to be everywhere at the moment again and I really love the floaty midi length style of these. Also pleased to see that boho themed dresses seem to be going nowhere fast, I absolutely love the look of this middle dress too – isn’t it dreamy!

I really love finding outfits online or on the high street and seeing how I can recreate them for myself with the sewing patterns I already own – such fun!

The patterns…

I had a think about the patterns I own and those that I could potentially use to recreate something similar to any of these dresses. I love the look of the McCalls 7974 pattern because it really has that floaty, romantic boho vibe. It’s not a pattern I currently own (yet) but I do love the look of it. I already own the Sew Over It Eve Dress pattern which is an amazing wrap dress. I’ve made a few different versions of this pattern already and with a couple of slight tweaks, I think it could definitely be used to recreate a wrap dress similar to my Pinterest cream wrap dress above. I also chose to include in my possible choices, the Sew Over It 1940s Tea Dress pattern, this is one I’ve had in my stash for a while but not yet made up. Again with a couple of tweaks such as lengthening and making the sleeves puffy, I think it could be used as a base to recreate something like my middle Pinterest image above too.

The fabrics…

I also had a look at all of the lovely fabrics over on My Fabrics to see what they had to offer that might suit my theme of romantic, floral, vintage and feminine.

I think this little selection below is my favourite but there were loads to choose from. I think the pale pink and sand colours would work really well with the light, romantic feel I want to create but the navy colours add a bit more depth and are possibly more wearable for me – decisions, decisions!

The fabrics are all linked within the picture if you’d like to pop over and take a closer look. Which is your favourite??

The mood board…

So with all of this inspiration and information gathered, I set about creating my Dream Valentines Day outfit mood board with Vista Create, it was super easy to do and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I’m so inspired by this theme, the patterns and fabrics will work really well together I think, whichever combination I choose to make up.

If you’d like to take part in the Makerist/MyFabrics Valentines Challenge, you can find all of the details over on Makerist’s Instagram linked here, there are some fab prizes up for grabs. The challenge is running until 13 February 2022 so there’s still time to enter from time of posting but note that if you’re reading this later on in the year you may have missed out this time.

You don’t actually have to make your outfit up as part of the challenge but of course I couldn’t come this far and not give it a try so stay tuned to see which pattern and fabric combination I end up choosing for my outfit, I’ll be blogging it very soon!

What do you think of my mood board and which outfit do you think I should try and recreate? I’d love to know…

Until next time…

Sally
